Lahore
is the Capital of Province of Punjab and the second largest city
of Pakistan. Lahore is also known as the City of Gardens, after
the significant rich heritage of the Mughal Empire. It occupies
a central position, and is generally called ' The Heart of Pakistan'.
It lies in the upper Indus plain of River Ravi and on East is Wahga
the only border open with India today.
Lahore is one
of the oldest cities of the world. Many believe its history goes
back Mahabharata and many others believe that Lahore was established
by Loh or Lava, the son of Rama, the renowned hero of the Hindu
epic the Ramayana. However, others believe it derives from the word
loh-awar, which means a fort as strong as iron and which refers
to the fort built to protect the city. It was the capital of the
Ghaznavid dynasty in the 12th century and was captured by the Mughal
Babur's troops in 1524; later, Akbar and Jahangeer rule on it. Sikhs
captured Lahore in early 19th century and later British government
rule on it. After partitioning of Indian Subcontinant in 1947, Lahore
became part of Pakistan.
Lahore has many
sites to visit. Mughal architecture such as, the Badshahi Mosque,
Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens and the mausoleums of Jehangir and
Nur Jehan are very famous among these. Another palce worth visiting
is the famous Lahore Museum. It has which has thousand of vey rare
motifs, pottery, jewelry coins statutes from pre historic Harrappa
civilization to Buddhist period. Other important places include
the Pearl and Golden mosques, the tomb of Ranjit Singh, and the
Wazir Khan mosque. |

Climate |
|
|
Lahore city covers a total land area of 404 km², but the city
is still growing at a considerable rate. The climate of Lahore is
very healthy and salubrious. Except for some days in summer Lahore
is a pleasant place to live. Mainly there are four seasons in a year;
Spring , Summer, Autumn & Winter. The temprature is extreme in
the months of May, June & July and raises upto 50 degrees Celsius.
In the mid of July monsoon season starts and goes upto late of August.
In monsoon, heavy rainfall occures throughout the city. December and
January are the coldest months of the year and temperature can drop
upto 0 degree Celsius. Spring season is celebrated with great zeal
by the people of Lahore and it gives them distinction throughout the

| Demographics |
|
According
to the 1998 census, Lahore's population was nearly 5,063,000 of
which 2,661,000 were males and 2,402,000 were females. In mid 2006
government estimates that it now reaches upto 10 million, which
makes it the second largest city in Pakistan, after Karachi and
one of the 30th largest city of world.
Many languages
are spoken in Lahore, including Punjabi, Urdu, Pashto and English.

|
Lahore
is the second largest city of Pakistan and is the center of its
economic activities. Lahore Stock Exchange LSE is center of economy
of city and is the second largest in Pakistan. The main industries
here are foundaries, steel mills, textile units and chemical factories.
main industrial areas include Kot Lakhpat and the new Sundar Industrial
Estate. Lahore is also the largest software producing and exporting
city in the country and major IT companies host here.
Food and restaurant businesses
is also well grooming in Lahore. Lahories are known tobe the lovers
of Spicy & Delicious food in the world. Along eith great many
traditional restaurants, recent years have seen western food chains
such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Subway Sandwiches, etc. A new tourist
attraction in Lahore is the famous Food Street in the historic places
of Lahore (Gawalmandi, Anarkali, and Badshahi). The shopping markets
usually remain open late into the night. There are many commercial
centers emerging from resedential areas which shows interest of
people in business. Main localities are
Liberty Market, the MM Alam Road, the new Jail Road which has some
of the largest office buildings in Lahore and the
new eight-lane Main Boulevard.
As the result of increase
of population inthe city including migration from other cities,
many housing projects have launched to give quality living. Some
of these are Bahria Town, Lake City project, Eden Villas, and Dhabi
Group.

| Culture |
|
Lahore
is cultural, intellectual and artistic center of Pakistan. Its faded
elegance, busy streets and bazaars, and wide variety of Islamic
and British architecture make it a city full of contrast and varity.
The warm and receptive people of Lahore are known for their traditional
hospitality and open minded. People celebrate many traditions, festivals
and days throughout the year. The city has a large Muslim population
therefore Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha are celebrated in full swing
in the city. The roads, streets and houses are decorated with lights,
candles, and other decorations which show their enthusiasm of being
live nation.
Basant is a Punjab festival
that marks the coming of spring. Basant celebrations in Pakistan
are centered in Lahore and people from all over the country and
abroad come to the city for the annual festivities. Kite flying
competitions take place all over the city's rooftops during Basant.
The Festival of Lamps
or Mela Chiraghan is a very important and popular event in Lahore.
This is celebrated at the same time as Basant, every spring on the
last Friday of March outside the Shalimar Gardens. During the festival,
people from all walks of life gather to actively participate in
the festival. The National Horse and Cattle Show is one of the most
famous annual festivals, it is held in Spring in the Fortress Stadium.
During the week long activities, there is a display of the finest
livestock, horse and camel dances, tent pegging, colourful folk
dances from all regions of Pakistan, mass-band displays and tattoo
shows in the evenings.
On August 14, the people
of Pakistan celebrate the day Pakistan gained its independence from
the British Raj. There are lots of celebrations in Lahore, the streets
are full of joyful people singing and dancing. Parades of the Pakistan
Army and Pakistan Airforce are held early in the morning. Concerts
are held with many pop and classical singers.
